Soccer 4 College does just that. It is an innovative new program created by the University of Utah, College of Social Work that it brings together underrepresented, immigrant and refugee youth to play soccer while inspiring them to lead healthy lifestyles, be engaged students and work toward enrolling in college. LGBT Resource Center searching for student staff member June 13, 2009 The University of Utah LGBT Resource Center has announced they are currently searching for a student staff member to be a significant part of the face of the LGBT Resource Center on campus. As a paid student staff you would assist with the running the office as well as maintaining the Center’s programming, under the supervision of the director. The awards are presented each year to outstanding individuals and organizations who have demonstrated sustained excellence in fostering leadership and a commitment to promote and enhance equity and diversity for students, staff and faculty at the University of Utah. Free film and lecture series at UMFA highlights American Indian art and culture April 16, 2009 The powerful experiences and culture of American Indians will be explored through a free film and lecture series at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts to take place April through November, 2009. Immigrants seeking to improve their lives graduate from intensive English language Course at U of U April 13, 2009 Local adult immigrants are graduating from a rigorous advanced English as a Second Language (ESL) program which makes it possible for them to aspire to professional occupations or to university studies. April 13, 2009 This years Days of Remembrance will commemorate the millions of victims of the Holocaust. Days of Remembrance will be presented April 13 – 16, 2009 at the University of Utah and will culminate with the State Observance of Holocaust Remembrance Day on April 21, 2009. The LGBT Resource Center announces Ally Week April 8, 2009 “TOGETHER WE CAN” a five day celebration of the work and contributions of “Allies” to the LGBT Movement, and a breaking of the silence around issues of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender oppression. The University of Utah announces Women's Week events February 20 , 2009 This year's Women's Week will be highlighted by a Keynote Address by Rev. Irene Monroe. Rev. Irene Monroe is a religious columnest and public theologian. She discusses issues surrounding women's spirituality and gender. The week will also consist of the Equity Monologues, a high school conference, panels and discussions. The senior University of Utah administration learned late Thursday afternoon that a private vendor was selling T-shirts on campus depicting a racist image of an American Indian male. The entire University joins our American Indian community members in expressing a collective repudiation of this racist depiction, and reaffirms that the University administration will not tolerate this type of hateful and harmful imagery on our campus. University of Utah student Diana Franca crowned Miss Latina USA 2009 October 28, 2008 University of Utah sophomore Diana Franca was named Miss Latina USA. Franca is majoring in economics and international studies. Upon graduation she hopes to work with foreign affairs and travel the world. Pastor France A. University of Utah expands diversity initiatives September 04, 2008 The University of Utah announced today that the Office for Diversity will expand its name to Equity and Diversity. Along, with the name change the university also announced that Jennifer Williams Molock, Ed. D., has been selected as the new assistant vice president for student diversity. The Office for Equity and Diversity is currently undergoing many changes including; a new space for the Center for Ethnic Student Affairs, new program coordinators within CESA and the addition of Jennifer Aoyagi Bangerter, Ed. D., as the administrative director; Rachel F. Pickett, Ph.D., as research fellow; and Colleen Casto as the director of communication and community outreach. University of Utah announces appointments to American Indian Programs May 14, 2008 The University of Utah announced today the appointment of Nola Lodge as the director of American Indian Teacher Education (AITE) in the College of Education and Lena Judee as the coordinator for American Indian students in the Center for Ethnic Student Affairs (CESA). The effort was a part of their annual high school conference. The conference is held in conjunctions with a senior conference held in the fall. Kathleen Digre, M.D. honored with Linda K. Amos Award for Distinguished Service to Women March 5, 2008 Nominations from across campus highlighted Professor Digre's distinguished service to women at the University of Utah, and clearly demonstrated that she represent the ideals and actions of Linda K. Amos, for whom the award was named.The award will be presented immediately prior to the 2008 Women's Week keynote address. This past spring meant many changes for the Center for Ethnic Student Affairs. University Announces Director for American Indian Resource Center December 14, 2007 Bev Fenton chosen as director. New director will help the University strenghten its outreach and services to American Indian students and their communities. Bev Fenton will work on development of programs and retention of students, as well as work closely with the Center for Ethnic Student Affairs. She will begin on January 2, 2008. “Raise the Roof” Concert A Success! November 12, 2007 College of Humanities raises funds for scholarships. On October 24 the College of Humanities held their second annual Evening of Conscience, a benefit concert at Capitol Theatre which focused on raising support for the college’s Community Scholarship for Diversity Fund, and the Calvary Baptist Church youth mentoring program. Utah Coalition of La Raza announces Cesar Chavez Banquet February 18, 2009 The 16th Annual Cesar Chavez Banquet will take place on March 27th, 2009. Each year the Utah Coalition of La Raza has taken the time to honor the memory of Cesar Chavez, as well as to recognize the contributions of dedicated individuals throughout the state. The National Alliance on Mental Illness offers local help February 11, 2009 In Recognition of the growing rate of mental illness NAMI with the help of Communidades Unidas will offer a weekly program. The program is offered to individuals with any kind of mental illness and will provide support and a safe space for individuals. Centro de la Familia launches bilingual website June 16, 2008 The state of Utah's largest latin0 focused non-profit announces their first ever bilingual website. The new site will focus on helping community members navigate eduacational resources as well as help interested partners support the Center's mission. Pete Suazo Business Center celebrates graduates June 3, 2008 The Pete Suazo Business Center graduated the Annual golf tournament announced to raise funds for scholarships May 27, 2008 The Utah Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Utah Hispanic Business Leadership Foundation announce their 3rd Annual Golf Tournament. The purpose of the golf tournament is to provide educational opportunities to Latino/a scholars. The Salt Lake City Film Center and Utah Pride Center announce film festival May 21, 2008 The 6th Annual Pride Film Festival titled, "Damn these heels!" will take place from June 13- 15. National Alliance on Mental Illness puts Latino health in perspective May 21, 2008 The National Alliance on Mental Illness reaches out to ethnic minorities and with particular focus on the growing Hispanic community throughout the Salt Lake valley. Robert Heyn honored by the Small Business Administration May 5, 2008 The Pete Suazo Business Center’s Executive Director - Robert Heyn is names Minority Small Business Champion of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration. Hawaiian Cultural Center announces First Film Festival and Cultural Celebration April 7, 2008 The film festival will feature a look into the Hawaiian perspective through films. There will be documentaries and films on subjects such as cultural myths and legends, history, education and modern issues such as sovereignty, land and water rights. Press Conference to highlight Voices of Undocumented Students February 13 , 2008 On February 14th, 2008 Utahns for the American Dream will host a press conference highlighting the value of education for all Utah children. The press conference will include information from community members, students and officials. A documentary highlighting the voices of undocumented students currently attending college under House Bill 144 will also be distributed. December 14, 2007 Second Annual Family Unity and Community Building Conference held in celebration of Black History Month . On February 23, 2008 the Office of Ethnic Affairs and Salt Lake Community College will host their annual conference featuring community centered events and forums. The conference features events to help community members with CHIP and Medicaid, scholarships and grants, small business loans and senior citizen vouchers. Jesse M. Soriano Named Director of the State Office of Ethnic Affairs December 14, 2007 Will oversee State Pacific Islander Hispanic/Latino, Asian and Black affairs offices. On December 14, 2007 the Office of Community and Culture announced that Jesse M. Soriano would lead the State office of Ethnic Affairs. He has previously served as the interum director for the office and has served as a community advocate for many years. Utah Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Announces Scholarship Recipients December 14, 2007 Christmas Gala held to honor winners. On December 14,2007, the Utah Hispanic Chamber of Commerce announced the names of more than 40 Latina/o scholarship recipients. “Invisible No More: Latinos’ Dignity March In Utah” November 12, 2007 Photo documentary exhibit to run Nov. 19 – December 19th at main library. On April 9, 2006, the Latino community of Utah, in collaboration with several organizations and Salt Lake officials, put together the largest march in the history of the state. More than forty three thousand people walked peacefully on the streets of Salt Lake to support a more humane and comprehensive immigration reform. November 12, 2007 University partners with KUED to launch new Spanish-language digital channel.
