In its first year ever, the Utah Hawaiian Film Festival is a rare glimpse of Hawaiian perspectives through cinema and will feature films about Hawaiian myths and legends told for the first time in the Hawaiian language. There will also be documentaries that explore Hawaiian history through the stories of its monarchy and her people; educational features of modern issues including sovereignty, land & water rights, and the environment; as well as highlights on cultural traditions of Hula, Wa’a-Outrigger Canoe, and other native arts & crafts.
Herman S. Lavata’i, Executive Director of the Hawaiian Cultural Center states, “We are very proud to provide a voice to the Native Hawaiian community here in the Wasatch Valley, the State of Utah, and the mainland through each film presentation. This unique opportunity will foster a better understanding for our Native Hawaiians & Pacific Islanders, and non-natives who reside here, about our rich Hawaiian cultural heritage that have existed for over 5,000 years. This is our invitation to everyone “E Komo Mai Kakou” to please come and enjoy in the experience of Hawai’i’s stories, sharing of the Hawaiian language, culture, and history through Cinema.
The Hawaiian Cultural Center, under the Ka Lama Mohala Foundation (KLMF), was established in 2005 with the mission of preserving and perpetuating all things Hawaiian. The Ka Lama Mohala Foundation is a proud sponsor of “Mo’olelo Ka Ho’owaiwai” [Stories of Enrichment] to help host this cultural event.
