“Raise the Roof” Concert A Success!
October 24, 2007
College of Humanities raises funds for scholarships.
On October 24 the College of Humanities held their second annual Evening of Conscience, a benefit concert at Capitol Theatre which focused on raising support for the college’s Community Scholarship for Diversity Fund, and the Calvary Baptist Church youth mentoring program. The event, "Raise the Roof! Celebrating Diversity," featured musician/composer, Michael Franti, creator of the band Michael Franti & Spearhead. Also featured were the Reverend France Davis and the Calvary Baptist Choir.
Due to tremendous support from event sponsors most of the proceeds will go to the Community Scholarships for Diversity Fund, as well as the Calvary Baptist Church youth mentoring programs. The event covered in the Deseret Morning News http://deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,695221729,00.html, sold over 1,200 tickets. In addition, the faculty of the College of Humanities came together to make a group gift of $7000 to the fund, which was complimented by an $18,000 gift from the college's Partnership Board.
The Community Scholarship for Diversity Fund provides $5,000 merit and need based scholarships to first-generation college students each year. To date the program has awarded scholarships to 24 students. Fourteen scholarship recipients have received degrees and six will graduate at the end of this academic year.
