February 13, 2008

"Voices of Undocumented Students"

Utahns for the American Dream (UAD) is distributing a DVD to Senators which contains excerpts from the documentary “Easy Targets” produced by the Growing Up in Salt Lake City high school youth research team. UAD urges that before voting on HB 241, Repeal of Exemptions from Nonresident Tuition (Donneslon, G.) that legislators “take the time to listen to the voices of students who will be most affected by this legislation: undocumented students.” Most of the students interviewed for the documentary came here at a very young age and have grown up in Utah. They consider Utah their home.

What: Press Conference to support the current law enacted in 2002 that allows children of undocumented parents to pay in-state tuition.

Where: Utah State Capitol Rotunda (west end)

When: Thursday, February 14 at 2:00 p.m.

Who: Former Representative David Ure, co-sponsor of HB 144 that created the current law; co-sponsor Senator Howard Stephenson (invited); a representative of higher education; and Xris Macias, a University of Utah history major.

Copies of the DVD and press packets will be available.

Utahns for the American Dream is a coalition of local Utah individuals and organizations working to ensure that qualified children of undocumented workers continue to have the opportunity to pay in-state tuition rates at state colleges and universities. UAD believes all Utah school students should be given the support to reach their full academic potential so they may become productive workers, good citizens, and contributing members of society.
