This unconventional 1982 British feminist play takes a hard look at the challenges women face in the workplace and society in general as they struggle to move ahead. In a dream-like sequence, a group of famous women of history gather at a dinner party to discuss their achievements, their losses, and the events that made them “top girls” in history. Top Girls explores the price many women must pay for success. At the time the play was written, Great Britain was ruled by females (Queen Elizabeth II as the monarch and, more importantly, Margaret Thatcher, then England's Prime Minister). During this time, British feminism, which previously had involved collective group gain, became more like American feminism, which celebrated individual women gaining power or wealth. Top Girls looks at some possible effects this philosophical approach to feminism might have on future generations of women.
