Jean Kilbourne
Presenting "Deadly Persuasion: Advertising and Addiction"
This year, she received a special recognition award from the Academy for Eating Disorders. She is a visiting scholar at Wellesley College, has served on the National Advisory Council on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, and been an adviser to two surgeons general. She lives in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Kilbourne educates her audience about health and addictions, as well as advertising and the media. She examines the selling of addictive products, such as alcohol, tobacco, diet products, and prescription drugs. She also exposes advertising's assault on self-image and the marketing of a mindset that often leads to unhealthy choices. The emphasis is on health and freedom ~ freedom from rigid sex roles, freedom from addiction, freedom from denial, and freedom from manipulation and censorship. Jean Kilbourne guides her audience with a light but sure touch. She lets familiar images reveal their hidden messages. Her slide presentation is a form of mass vaccination with a symbolic antidote of a most powerful kind. ~ George Gerbner, Dean Emeritus, The Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania All events are free and open to the public.
