College of Humanities
Through healthy questioning and attempts at inclusion and connection, the College of Humanities offers approaches that are fundamentally democratic. Students of the humanities learn to think critically, express themselves effectively, understand the nuances of cultural issues, interpret human experience, and appreciate the power of words and ideas. In doing so, they broaden their historical, ethical, social, and international perspectives and enhance themselves intellectually and creatively. There are six departments in the college: communication, English, history, language and literature, linguistics, and philosophy. They have five programs: Asian Studies, Environmental Humanities graduate program, International Studies, Latin American Studies, and the University Writing Program. They are four centers: Center for American Indian Languages, Middle East Center, Obert C. and Grace A. Tanner Humanities Center, and the University Writing Center.
