College of Engineering
The mission of the College of Engineering is to prepare students for leadership positions and professional practice in academia, industry, and government; to improve the productivity, health, safety, and enjoyment of human life through leading-edge research; and to stimulate and grow the economy of the state of Utah by providing qualified engineering professionals who are capable of transferring the technologies developed to the private sector. There are seven departments in the college: bioengineering, chemical engineering, civil and environmental engineering, electrical and computer engineering, materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering, and the school of computing.
Deidre Hughes Schoenfeld Deidre strives to provide all female students and students of color in the College of Engineering with various opportunities and support services, including information on scholarships, financial aid, internships, and admissions; tutoring and study groups; academic and career advising resources as well as networking opportunities with industry or students/faculty. In addition, Deidre also serves as the STEP director for the University of Utah. STEP (Science, Technology, Engineering Program) directors work to support graduating MESA students and others who are pursuing math, science, and engineering at the U. |
MESA/STEP Consortium
Founded in 1985, the Utah MESA/STEP Consortium is a nonprofit organization comprised of higher education institutions, businesses/industries, public school districts, government agencies, and community organizations.
MESA (mathematics, engineering, science achievement) is a statewide Public Education program that works with targeted students in grades 7-12, who are interested in and capable of succeeding in math, science, and technology-related studies.
STEP (science, technology, engineering programs) is the higher education component that consists of Salt Lake Community College, the University of Utah, Utah State University, and Weber State University. STEP directors work with graduating MESA students and others in the target population who are pursuing math, science, engineering, and related fields of study. While all students may participate in MESA/STEP, the program’s focus is on the target populations of African Americans, Latinos, American Indians, Pacific Islanders, and women.
